Daniel 7:13-14
13 “I saw in the night visions,
and behold, with the clouds of heaven
there came one like a son of man,
and he came to the Ancient of Days
and was presented before him.
14 And to him was given dominion
and glory and a kingdom,
that all peoples, nations, and languages
should serve him;
his dominion is an everlasting dominion,
which shall not pass away,
and his kingdom one
that shall not be destroyed
Reflection: Son of Man
Written By: Pastor Jesse Caro
At the beginning of the year, in January, I was listening to a
Christian catholic apologist (Brant Pitre) talk to Alex O’Conner (an agnostic)
about Jesus. It was on YouTube. It was an hour and a half of excellent discussion
as to the nature of Jesus. At issue is the assumption made by Alex that Jesus
never made any divine claims. That is, Oconner believes that Jesus never came
right out and said, “listen, I am God, the third person of the Trinity.” He, of
course, is correct… Jesus did not blatantly say it. O’Conner further believes
that we as Christians are reading too much into the parts of the New Testament
that we think make Jesus divine (God). To this basic idea, toward the end of
the “debate” Brant brings up Daniel 7.
You see, in Mark 14 the high priest (during Jesus’ final trial)
asks Jesus once and for all the question that will settle the issue. He
essentially says, “let’s stop playing word games… tell me are you the son of
God.” Jesus replies by quoting part of Daniel 7: “I am, and you will see
the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power, and coming with the
clouds of heaven.” After this, the High Priest rips his clothes and proclaims
that there is no more evidence needed that Jesus was a blasphemer claiming to
be God. Daniel 7 is an extremely important text as we defend the fact that Jesus
did claim to be God. Indeed, the Jewish Priests thought he did… and Daniel
7 was Jesus’ most powerful divine claim. Jesus, in claiming that he fulfilled
Daniel 7, tipped the scales for the High Priest. Jesus was claiming to be the
same “Son of Man” spoken of by Daniel… the one who would be seated as an equal
at the throne of God. For the Jews of Jesus’ day, this was all the evidence
needed to have Jesus killed. Daniel 7 describes for us the glorious truth that Jesus
is the Son of Man spoken of by the prophet, and he will one day return in
the clouds. Oh, glorious day!
Prayer
Lord, thank you that you are who you said you are, the Son of Man,
reigning victorious on the throne of God.
