John 4:24
24 God is spirit
Reflection: Question #4
Written By: Pastor Jesse Caro
Question: What is God
Answer: God is a spirit infinite, eternal, and unchangeable in his being, wisdom, power, holiness, justice, goodness, and truth.
Now that is a mouthful. That is a lot to chew on… jam packed with theological bombshells of truth. God is unlike any being in the Universe. He is awe-inspiring and majestic. The Book of Deuteronomy reports that God is mysterious (29:29), and Romans tells us his ways are past “finding out”(King James wording) (11:33) God is way, way beyond our comprehension. He is complex beyond anything our words can put on a page.
And… God wants to be known. This is one of the great story and good news of the Scriptures: that God wants to be known. This reminds me of the great Jain parable of the four blind men. The blind men attempt to describe an elephant. One man, after grabbing the elephant’s tail, says that the elephant is like a snake. The second man, leaning on the side of the animal, says elephants are like walls. “No, elephants are like big leaves,” says the man grabbing the ear. The last man objects, grabbing the leg, describing the elephant like a tree. This famous parable attempts to teach that all religions are describing God differently, each emphasizing an element of who God is. The failure of this parable is that it does not account for the Biblical God. The God we serve wants to be known. He does not want to leave us blind to who he is, even in his mystery. He does not leave us guessing. He wants to dispel any question as to what he is like, so he takes on flesh, takes on the form of a man, and demonstrates for us His nature in the person of Christ. Jesus is the description of who God is! If you want to know what God is like, look no further than to the person of Christ!
Prayer
Lord, thank you for showing us what you are like. Thank you that Jesus describes Christ for us, dispelling the questions and clarifying forever that you are a good and loving God.
