31 By faith Rahab the prostitute did not perish with those who were disobedient, because she had given a friendly welcome to the spies.
Reflection: Rahab
Written By: Pastor Jesse Caro
Of all the narratives in the Book of Joshua, the conquest of Jericho gets top billing. This story has several parts. Of course, the main part is where the walls come down miraculously after the strange 7 days of marching around the city. Also, there is Achan… the story of the of him taking the forbidden/accursed things from the spoils of war… this part is also interesting. However, the story of the two spies finding lodging and safety by Rahab…this part of the story is important. Rahab is, after all, mentioned in the New Testament three times.
Rabah would become part of Jesus’ lineage in Matthew 1. Rahab joined the Israelites and married Salmon. She became the mother (or ancestor) of Boaz, the great-great-grandmother of King David, and a direct ancestor in the genealogy of Jesus Christ. She would bring down the scarlet cord (a foretelling of Christ, no doubt), saving her and her family from destruction, and showing her faith in the God of Abraham. Ultimately, she is known for her faith. This prostitute, from a wicked city… a woman of ill repute… would display faith in such a way as to be blessed to be in Jesus’ Davidic line and honored in the Hall of Faith. That is amazing! Rahab is a picture of the great grace of God: that God welcomes the disgraced sinner, and honors faith and repentance. I trust that today you will see the grace of God in this story and give him praise… for we were all once like Rahab… unrighteous and undeserving.
Prayer
God in Heaven, thank you for your display of grace in this story… showing us that none of us is too far from the love and mercy of God.
