Micah 6:8

8  He has told
you, O man, what is good;

and what does the Lord require of you

but to do justice, and to love kindness,

and to walk humbly with your God?

Reflection: A
Message from Micah

Written By: Pastor Jesse
Caro

Allow
me once again to go to Sunday’s reading. Note: a “minor prophet” is a categorical
way of describing the length of the prophetic books. “Major prophets” (like
Isaiah, Nehemiah, and Jeremiah) describe that these books are long.

Kelly
was coming off the heals of a very difficult miscarriage around the holidays around
Y2K. We were devastated. A few months later we discovered that we might have a
Christmas baby in few months… December of 2001! When we found out that we were being
blessed with a boy, we debated what to name him. We knew his middle name would
be Anthony, after Kelly’s father who died unexpectantly when Kelly was three. It
would definitely be a biblical name, and a good name. We loved the name “Noah” (a
man of great faith), and that made our top 2. But the name “Micah” won the day…
a “minor prophet” with a small book hidden at the end of the Old Testament. But
“minor” as that book may seem, the prophetic voice of Micah the prophet was BIG.
We were excited for our son to be named after this man of God (and we pray that
our son might be equally used of God).

Micah
the Prophet says it all. He proclaims judgments and speaks peace. He even
prophesies that the Messiah would be born in Bethlehem. In this short book, Micah
“packs a punch.” But he also does what the great preachers do: he condenses
things down to a simple, approachable, and understandable level for the listener
(and reader). This prophetic book does so excellently. In fact, in Micah we
read one of the clearest Old Testament calls to faith. We read what it means,
when it is all boiled down, to follow God:

 He has told you, O man, what is good;

and what does the Lord require of you

but to do justice, and to love kindness,

and to walk humbly with your God?

This
is not complicated. It is straightforward and applicable. Do justice,
love kindness, walk humbly
. That is what God says is “good.” Would you
say that is something worthy to strive for?

Prayer

Lord, thank you that you have not left us to try and capture your
nature with different religions. You have sent us Christ who is the very image
of God!
