Ezekiel 39:28

28  Then they
shall know that I am the Lord their God, because I sent them into
exile among the nations and then assembled them into their own land. I will
leave none of them remaining among the nations anymore.

Reflection: A
Review of Ezekiel: Know That I Am the Lord

There
is no mistaking, if you have paid any attention to the reading of Ezekiel, that
God really, really wants people to know who he is. Depending on the translation
you use, anywhere from 65-75 times is written in Ezekiel, “know that I am the
Lord.” Ezekiel records God’s words often… “that they (or “that you”) may know
that I am the Lord.” God has a desire to be known. This much is clear from a
quick reading of Ezekiel.

One
of my favorite “parables” is a Jain parable I heard a few years ago. The
parable is meant to imply that all religions are pointing to an aspect of God,
and therefore all religions are equally valid. However, for me, I think the
parable better describes that God wants to be known more clearly than to leave humans
guessing. It goes like this: 4 blind men are asked to describe an elephant. One
grabs the elephant’s leg and says, “an elephant is like a tree trunk.” Another
man leans on the side of the elephant: “an elephant is like a wall.” The third grabs
the tail… “an elephant is like a snake,” he says. The last man grabs the ear
exclaiming, “an elephant is like a leaf.” That is, of course, how a blind man
might describe elements of an elephant, in his ignorant and blind state. But
elephants are not like leaves, walls, tree trunks, or snakes. Elephants are
exactly like elephants. To the point of the parable, God has not left us
blind to discover who he is, such that we are left flailing trying to describe
God as blind people. No, God wants to be known. I would say, furthermore, that if
God wanted to be known he might very well do what we profess he did: send his
Son to be with us. That is, of course, what we think is the most reasonable
answer to the question, “who is God?” We believe that God sent his Son to show
us exactly who he is. We believe that he has not left us guessing. He
sent his Son to describe himself to us so that we are not left blind, trying to
discover who God is!

Prayer

Lord, thank you that you have not left us to try and capture your
nature with different religions. You have sent us Christ who is the very image
of God!
