2 Samuel 7:18
18 Then King David went in and sat before the Lord and said, “Who am I, O Lord God, and what is my house, that you have brought me thus far?”
Reflection: David, A Humble, Prayerful Man
Written By: Pastor Jesse Caro
In the next few days, we will read about the terrible mistakes David will make. He will see Bathsheba from his deck, lust after her, and commit adultery with her. When she becomes pregnant, David will put her husband in battle in such a way as to have him killed… in order to cover for his sin and her pregnancy. Now, I doubt anybody reading this devotional today would say that they have had an affair and plotted a murder to cover his/her tracks. In fact, if we knew of any such person, we would be forgiven for thinking lowly of them.
God, however, in his mercy characterizes David as a “man after God’s own heart.” We see that humility of spirit in David’s prayer here: “Who am I, O Lord God, and what is my house, that you have brought me thus far?” Of course, David is not perfect. Indeed, he will fail miserably and spectacularly. But there is something about David that God sees. There is something deep down that God honors. After all, David would be responsible for writing most of the Psalms, and for beginning the kingly lineage from which Jesus would come. His repentant heart and spirit of humility, no doubt, were components that God saw that were worthy of honor. David is very far from perfect, for sure. However, God honors him anyway. David gives me hope that God can look past my worst days and most miserable decisions and still use me for his purposes.
Prayer
Lord, may we possess in ourselves a spirit of humility and gratitude, as we contemplate the fact that you have forgiven our worst days and most awful decisions.
