Micah 6:8
24 …He has told you, oh mortal, what is good and what does the Lord require but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God.
Reflection: Question #34
Written By: Pastor Jesse Caro
Question: What duty does God require of humanity?
Answer: The duty which God requires of humanity is obedience to his revealed will.
We had narrowed it down to Noah and Micah. Our son, first-born, would have to live with this name and we wanted it to be a good one. We wanted him to have a strong, Biblical, name that reflected a strong, Biblical, historic figure. Of course, Noah would be on that list. Noah would display great faith in building the Ark in obedience to God, despite the fact that he had never seen rain before. Our son, we prayed, would have a similar faith. Micah was far less well known but one of the great “minor prophets” (“minor prophets” are the so-called prophetic books that are really short in the end of the Old Testament… but their impacts were not “minor”). Micah was a bold prophet speaking against injustice and boldly proclaimed judgment on the evil King Ahaz. Micah was a prophet with unwavering boldness. We named our son Micah.
Micah tells the people, with clarity and fervor, that God requires us to do justice, to love kindness, and to walk humbly with our God. If you ever want to preach a clear sermon, with three compelling points… look no further than Micah 6:8. Justice. Kindness. Humility. These are three great words to live by. Justice makes us think of others. It guides us to consider that the world is not just, and we can work hard to make it just (like the Kingdom of God is). We ourselves can be kind to others, even as we fight for justice. And, all the while, we are encouraged to walk with humility… knowing that we ourselves have not arrived, are not perfect, and need Jesus just like the rest. I encourage you to practice these things this week… and read the small prophetic book of Micah and discover his bold zeal for God.
Prayer
Lord, may we this week walk humbly with you as we fight for justice and live in kindness towards others.
