Reflection: Thoughts on Genealogies, Part 2

Written By: Pastor Jesse Caro

Following
on yesterday’s Rooted devotional, I will say that (in addition to reading every
name in genealogies) I take care to pronounce the names as accurately as I can.
Part of this is my obsessiveness to say with a clean conscience that “I read
the book from cover to cover.” Yes, I try to pronounce the names (a difficulty
for certain). I say this not to brag, but by way of encouragement.

I
think a reason I value the genealogies, is that it reminds me that God has
taken the accuracy of his book very seriously. The accounting for very mundane
and detailed lists in the Bible is a fact that should inspire confidence in the
reader that God’s Word is trustworthy and true. Now, you might say, “well, how
do I know the names are true or accurate?” Well, maybe an error has crept in
over the centuries, but the point is that God’s Word has, as one of its goals,
the goal to be accounted for as accurate history. Genealogies serve the purpose
of adding detailed credibility to the narratives. Imagine if the Bible simply
said, “David had a bunch of descendants.” I think that would place the validity
of the biblical narrative in serious doubt. The Bible may as well say, “David
had a bunch of descendants, the listing of them is unimportant.” I think God’s
Word adds these details, which lend historic credibility (especially when
archeology confirms the details), so that when we come to, for example, the
story of the Virgin Birth, we have a built-in expectation that the story is
equally historically accurate!

So,
I encourage you strongly: push through and read these genealogies. Appreciate
them! Honor them! They play vital roles in the biblical record.

Prayer

Heavenly
Father, thank you for, in the course of history, assuring that we have a record
of historic events in the Bible that is accurate and detailed. May we have all
the more confidence in the reading of the Word.
