Isaiah 6:3
3 And one
called to another and said:
“Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts;
the whole earth is full of his glory!”
Reflection: Introduction
to Isaiah
Written By: Pastor Jesse

The
Book of Isaiah was written, likely, by two authors. The first two-thirds of the
book is written under the Assyrian captivity (8th century BC),
whereas the last part (chapters 40-55) were written under Babylonian captivity (6th
century BC). In any event, this book is considered the “Shakespeare” of the prophetic
books. It has more to say about the time of trouble (the “tribulation”), the
Millenium, Christ’s coming (both as a child and in his second coming), and the
greatness of God than any other prophetic book. It is, in this sense, the Opus
Magnum of prophetic books to study.
Isaiah
6 gives us the most terrifying glimpse of God’s throne room of any prophetic
book. Isaiah, in a vision, sees God on his throne, with terrifying seraphim
around him chanting “holy, holy, holy….” The very image of God brings Isaiah to
exclaim, “woe is me! For I am lost; for I am a man of unclean lips….” As the
story unfolds, we read, “And I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom
shall I send, and who will go for us?” Then I said, “Here I am! Send me.”
I love this story as it tells us of the absolutely holy nature of God… a god
who, at his sight, brings us to our knees in absolute terror. This God calls us
to be his spokesperson. Not everyone who knows that God is recruiting people to
this holy occupation of being a spokesperson for God… not everyone signs up.
Clearly God is asking and looking, and there seem to be few that will answer
the call. I, of course, do not mean to suggest that the call is for full-time
ministry. It is not. But the call of God is for us, as a matter of commitment,
to spend our lives as if we were sent on his mission, for his glory.
Prayer
Lord, thank you for this prophetic witness and the story we read
in Isaiah 6. May we, like Isaiah, be committed to being sent by you, for godly
purposes into this dark world.
