Psalm 84:10

10 For a day in your courts is better

    than a thousand elsewhere.

I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God

than dwell in the tents of wickedness.

Reflection: Door Keepers

Written By: Pastor Jesse Caro

The person who is the celebrant for communion
at 9:45 and 11:15 has the responsibility of bidding farewell to people as they
leave at the door nearest the sanctuary. The main door, by the main lot, is
where whoever preaches bids farewell. I love to lead communion and mostly do so
in the latter services. So, mostly I am at the door nearest the sanctuary. It
often occurs to me the great privilege it is to be the doorkeeper and greeter. Especially
in the brutally cold winter I hate being near that door, but even then, I often
think, “what a privilege to be a doorkeeper in the house of the Lord!”

The Psalmist is, of course, thinking of the Temple ministry. No
doubt it was hard work to stand and stand by a door at the Temple. You might
know that there were no shade trees in the the Temple courthouse… and I am sure
it was likely a thankless and menial job, compared to the priests and musicians
that had “important ministries.” But the Psalmist here knows that “door
keeping” is God’s beautiful work in his house, and therefore a privilege. That
“menial” work is better than lush comforts in the house of the wicked. You see,
church ministry might be hard, boring, and thankless, but it is a high
privilege of eternal proportion
. To the many, many readers who serve in
God’s house… may the Lord bless you for your work.

Prayer

Lord God, bless those who serve at Timberlake Church. Even if
their ministry is often thankless and unnoticed, bless them by your hand for
their ministry to you!
