YOU'RE INVITED TO CELEBRATE THE LENTEN SEASON
AT TIMBERLAKE!

LENT Sermon Series: A Hunger for God
Join us on Sunday during Lent.
In our world of endless food options, from grocery delivery to fast food, from breakfast to midnight snacks, and the illnesses and dis-ease we suffer as a result, the idea of fasting seems out of step and even radical. Maybe that’s a good thing. Fasting is one of the most important spiritual disciplines found in the Bible, and yet it also happens to be one of the most neglected in today’s church. Giving up food or other things is a means of grace God uses to help us trust in the Spirit, care for the poor, and become more like Jesus. Join us during Lent as will consider the Biblical witness about fasting, and learn to practice it for ourselves.
Timberlake Corporate Fasting Guide
March 5 - April 19, the season of Lent
The leaders of Timberlake are declaring a corporate fast for the season of Lent, 2025. ‘Fasting’ means we go without food or some other essential material good for spiritual purposes, and ‘corporate’ means we do it together, with the explicit purpose of seeking God’s will and God’s wisdom for our church through prayer.
Biblical Example
In Acts 13, the church was worshipping and fasting as a way to listen for the Spirit and to wait for God’s empowering them for mission.
Also find examples of corporate fasting in Esther 4:16, Joel 2, II Chronicles 20:3-4, Ezra 8:21, and Nehemiah 1:4.
What is Fasting?
Abstaining from food for spiritual purposes for a number of hours each day, or up to one or two days each week. It’s ok to start small.
The time usually spent eating should be spent in Bible study and prayer.
The purposes of fasting are many, including trusting in the Spirit, growing in holiness, amplifying our prayers, feeding the hungry, surrendering ourselves to God, and seeking God’s guidance.
Fast Details
Pastor Brad is asking all Timberlake people to consider a fast on Thursdays, from 6:00am to 6:00pm. Do not abstain from water. If a medical condition prohibits you from giving up food, give up something else meaningful, such as technology or spending money.
Read and mediate on God’s word. Follow the ROOTED devotions here.
Pray for God’s will for Timberlake.

HAPPENINGS THROUGHOUT THE MONTH
PASTOR BRAD'S LENTEN PRAYER WALK
MARCH 12TH - APRIL 16TH | 12PM-12:30PM
Each Wednesday during Lent (March 12 – April 16), we invite you to join us for an outdoor prayer walk as we circle our campus in prayer. Together, we will lift up our ministry, our people, and our neighbors, giving thanks for all that God has done in our past while seeking His guidance for the future. This sacred time of reflection and intercession will take place from 12:00 to 12:30 p.m., beginning at the Columbarium. Please park on the Greenwell Court side of the building (Lot 4) and come prepared to walk and pray in faith and unity.
As we consider the discipline of fasting, especially during Lent, we are reminded that the early church fasted. We see it in Acts 13 and 14, as well as in 2 Corinthians. Furthermore, Jesus assumes we are fasting when he says, “when you fast…” (Matthew 6:16). Therefore, though fasting is often neglected, we ought to take it seriously as a spiritual discipline.
What does fasting accomplish? Primarily fasting puts us in a position where we must depend on God! “Man shall not live by bread alone,” Jesus reminds us! We must depend on, and hunger for, God. Fasting from food (and other things we have come to depend on) can remind us that God is extremely important in our lives. Fasting reminds us that we need God.
We encourage you, during this season of Lent, to learn to trust and depend on God more than ever before. Fasting will help you to do this. We are committed to offering great resources for you so that you can grow in your faith and deeply hunger for God!

FASTING RESOURCES
Have questions? We have the answers!
Like with any spiritual discipline, fasting teaches our body that it is not God. Fasting, perhaps more than any other discipline, teaches us that we must depend on God. When we fast, our body craves food. As we get hungry, we remind ourselves that we need God more than food (Matthew 4:4). As we are hungry, we ask God to help us to desire relationship with him more than anything in this world. Ultimately, our goal is to learn to hunger for God.
We can fast on anything that we really enjoy and depend on. Fasting food is an obvious option because we all depend on food. However, we can also fast from technology, social media, games, cell phones, and other things we have come to depend on for our happiness.
Interestingly the Bible never commands fasting. However, Jesus assumes we will do it (Matthew 6:16).
Like with any spiritual discipline, you should make fasting a part of your life. As a rule, anything Jesus did he did to model behavior for us. We follow in his footsteps! While the Bible does not tell us how often we should fast, we should make it a part of our life as the Spirit of God leads you.
Just like the question of “how often should I fast,” the Bible does not say how long a fast should last. One should prayerfully consider the duration of a fast, and do so as unto the Lord, with a heart to draw closer to Christ!
Many people when they are fasting food, start off slowly. Perhaps it is wise to give up a meal one day, two meals the next, and fast the entire day the next. There is no rule. However, wisdom should be taken not to foolishly fast from food without being spiritually and physically well and prepared.
Especially if you are fasting from food, you should be mindful of your health. If you have a condition that fasting from food might impact, please seek the advice and instruction from your physician. Fasting from food, while very helpful, is not the only means of fasting.
Praying goes hand in hand with fasting. When you fast you are, by God’s grace, trying to hear Gid and draw closer to him. You are learning to desire him and depend on him. Prayer is absolutely central to this effort. In fasting, you try to maintain, as much as is possible, a spirit of prayer.
