Ecclesiastes 5:4

When you make a vow to God, do not delay to fulfill it. He has no pleasure in fools; fulfill your vow.

Reflection: Sermon thoughts…. Vows
Written By: Pastor Jesse Caro

One of the great indications of good character is the trait of saying what you mean. The New Testament puts it this way: let your yes be yes, and your no be no. I have met plenty of dishonest people. I knew a guy once who made so many promises to me when I was a church planter. Promise after promise… that never came through. His friends called him called “SD.” Privately, Kelly and I came to know him as “shady deal.” Have you ever known anyone who said they would do this or that and never come through? It is annoying at a minimum and infuriating at a maximum.
God, evidently, is not excited about people like that either. When people make promises to God and do not pay their vow, God is not happy. He takes no delight in it… and calls them fools. What are we to make of this? We are to know under no uncertain terms that behavior like this is foolish and God is not delighted by it. In the context of worship, we often make commitments to God. And we should. That is the point. But when we do, we ought to fulfill the commitments we make to God. Or we make ourselves fools!

Prayer
Father in Heaven, forgive us when we make commitments we do not keep. May we ever remember that we ought to keep our vows or not make them!
