Job 14:1

1  Mortals, born of woman, are of few days and full of trouble

Reflection: Lego Village
Written By: Pastor Jesse Caro

I am looking at my Lego Christmas Village atop my fireplace hearth (we never use our chimney). I am snuggled under a blanket admiring the winter scene. Every year Lego releases a set that is in a Christmas Village theme. Every year, for the last 6 years, we have bought it, along with extra train tracks, Santa’s sleigh, additional Christmas trees, gingerbread house, etc. Last year was the first year we displayed our village sets, and I did so on quilt batting, to represent the snow. It was super cute. However, for this year I decided to build all the landscape with Lego, detailed with snow made of hundreds of white pieces. I made hills, rock faces, sidewalks for a downtown scene, and a road for the mail delivery vehicle to retrieve a letter to Santa from a waiting homeowner. Plans are being made for an expansion in 2026!
It is picturesque. Though Lego is made of relatively cheap ABS plastic (from which pipes are made), it does look like a winter scene… cozy and warm. It is, of course, an illusion. Much like our Christmas Hallmark films, life is just not as clean and cozy. For a moment things like these transport us into a fantasy… and then we are back in the real world. The fact is, as cozy as I feel as I write this Rooted, shortly I will head to bed and be reminded of my knees and their aching of mild arthritis. Of arthritis there is no escape. Mortals are short of days… and full of trouble. That is Job’s grim assessment. But one day we will escape the arthritis, the short days, and the trouble and be transported to a wonderland where God is present everywhere and there are no more tears. That will be, one day, our reality!

Prayer
Lord, help us as we deal with the realities of life and give us expectant hope for a better eternity. And thank you for the small joys we get to appreciate today!
