Galatians 3:28
There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is not male nor female; for you are all one in Christ!
Reflection: Movie Night… The Help
Written By: Pastor Jesse Caro
The other night we had only one of our children with us. Micah was in Ohio and Addison was staying the night at a friend’s house. So, Chloe was stuck with Kelly and I and we decided to rent a movie. There are plenty of movies my kid’s have yet to see… classics that they need to watch (a “classic” for me is a movie from the 80’s and 90’s LOL). They have yet to watch Ghostbusters, The Sixth Sense, Weekend at Bernie’s, Ferris Bueller’s Day off, or Hoosiers. Furthermore, they have not seen more recent great films like Lincoln or The Darkest Hour. A long list of “must watch” films! We have failed our kids! Anyway… we settled on the Academy Award winning film, The Help (2011).
The Help depicts a southern antebellum town in the deep south struggling with deep seated racism and prejudice. The main character, “Skeeter,” befriends Aibileen (a hired maid) in order to write about the difficulties of dealing with the innate racism of the culture. Though fictional, it is a great film and a reminder of how easily the social pressure to mistreat people can cause good folks to act awful. Once more, I watch films like this and think “where are the real Christians who might be reminded that in Christ ‘there is no Jew nor Greek, no slave nor free’?” We all deal with our own prejudices, do we not. These prejudices may come in all shapes and sizes. But this is always the anecdote to prejudice: remembering that, but by God’s grace, we would be the worst of these.
Prayer
Lord, may we then be aware of your grace in our lives such that we dispense it freely to others.
