Consider the Christian life in terms of darkness and light.  Vulnerability means letting that which has been in the dark come into the light.  The light of Christ illumines us as we are… both good and bad, both holiness and evil, both purity and impurity.

1 John 1:5-10

5 This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all.

6 If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth.

7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.

8 If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.

9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.

10 If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word is not in us.

Reflections

When we deny or minimize our sin, it’s a sure sign that we have deceived ourselves.  No one except Jesus is without sin.  It can be quite scary for us to acknowledge our sin.  And yet only that which is confessed is forgiven, and only that which is exposed will be transformed.  Here is the good news: for all of the pain of exposing our sin, this is the way to healing, for God who is faithful and just purifies us by the blood of Jesus Christ. What do you need to confess today?

Prayer

God of light and life, in whom there is no darkness at all, we have been afraid of your light, for it threatens to expose the worst parts of us.  But then we remember that you are faithful and just, you are a God of mercy and kindness.  So give us confidence in you, Lord, to know that when we cast ourselves on your mercy, you will always catch us.  Through Christ the Lord I pray.  Amen.
