John 10:27, 28
My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand.
Reflection: God’s Voice, Part 2
Written By: Pastor Jesse Caro
When my dad spoke, we (my brothers and I) shut up and listened. This was true especially when he had a particular voice: that voice that says, “what I am about to say is important? Do you know what I am talking about? One of the memories that I have is driving from Mobile, Alabama to New York City on vacation… to visit my grandparents who lived in Brooklyn. I was young and we had a Ford Fairmont, light blue. 3 of us brothers in the back… rambunctious and impatient. We would stir about and fight and argue… until someone bumped dad’s seat. Big mistake. “Stop kicking my seat,” dad would say in that unmistakable tone. And we dang sure listened.
The voice of God is something like that! Not to say that we are in terror of God’s voice, but, when he speaks, we perk up and listen. The Bible says that when he speaks, we “follow.” That is, we obey. We take what he says seriously. Sheep do that even if they do it imperfectly. We are his sheep, and we hear his voice. Other voices in our lives should not cause us to perk up and listen, but when the Shepherd speaks, we absolutely notice. He gives us eternal life, after all. Why would we not listen and obey?
Prayer
Father in Heaven, Great Shepherd, we hear your voice. Be patient with us as we learn to follow, and lead us, Good Shepherd, into eternal life
