Revelation 22:20
He which testifies these things saith, Surely, I come quickly. Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus.

Reflection: Advent
Written By: Pastor Jesse Caro

Tomorrow begins the season of Advent. Advent, meaning “to come to” in Latin, is the time when the church gets to look forward to the coming of Christ, and backwards to the fact that he came! I will confess right here and right now, that I focus more about Christ having come (Christmas) than the fact that he is to return. I am sure that this is not a unique experience. It is the Christmas season we are approaching, and it is natural for us, here in America, to focus predominantly on Christ’ birth.

The other part of my focus (beyond the happy, feel-good, nature of the nostalgia of Christmas) is because I do not want to think of Christ’ return. It is a source of some anxiety to think of the unknown. For many of us that day will be a day that will have its element of fear and dread. Of course, we will be in God’s presence… and that is good. However, we may not be prepared as we should. We may find ourselves flat footed. I, personally, know that God has called me to be faithful in areas that I have not been. And that prospect of not being ready for Christ’ return makes me nervous. May we be ready, for the Lord is soon returning. Even so, come quickly Lord Jesus!

Prayer
Lord, may we see your return as a joyous moment and not one of dread. Forgive us for not being prepared such that we can’t say “come quickly Lord Jesus.”
