Ecclesiastes 3:12

I know that there is nothing better for them than to rejoice and to do good in one’s lifetime.

Reflection: Sermon thoughts… Ecclesiastes 3

Sunday we jumped back into Ecclesiastes. Pastor Brad mentioned The Westminster Catechism. This catechism Is regarded as one of the best catechisms to teach doctrinal truth throughout the history of the church. Catechisms were, as you may know, teaching tools which the church used to teach doctrine. They were constructed as a series of questions and answers that were often short and easily memorized. You ought to try reading some catechisms… they are rather instructive reads!!!!

We were reminded yesterday of the very first question in this great catechism. The question is this: what is the chief end of man? The answer: to glorify God and enjoy him forever! What a great truth! The goal of man is to glorify God, but here’s the thing… To glorify God is actually the most fulfilling thing that we can do for ourselves. That is, the more we glorify God, the more genuinely joyful we are. The enemies great deceit is that living for ourselves will bring us ultimate satisfaction!  “Eat the fruit,” The serpent says. So, we eat! And, we die! Indeed, from the beginning of time, this has always been true: glorifying God is the best, guaranteed way to be genuinely fulfilled. Living for yourself will always bring chaos and death. Living for God will always bring an eternal kind of life!

Prayer:
Lord help us to learn the long lesson that for us to truly live we must truly die. May our desires be for you, trusting that you will fulfill us with joy everlasting.
