Hebrews 13:5
Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.”
Reflection: Black Friday
Written By: Pastor Jesse Caro
I have to be very honest… I love Black Friday. I have many great memories of waking up super early to go with my parents Black Friday shopping in search of a great deal. Kelly and I used to do the same for the kids… go out early and shop (one of us remaining home as the kids slept) for Christmas deals. I still love going to Sam’s Club and noticing the deals that stores now spread out throughout the whole month leading up to Black Friday. It is a rare thing now to see stores open at 3 AM for the committed shopper. Sad!
I admit, however, that I am a slave to the idea of getting a good deal. There is a Netflix documentary that just was released exposing the tricks and marketing schemes employed by stores and manufacturers in order to make us as consumers believe we NEED their products. We have become a very consumer driven society. And I am reminded of a book I love: Freedom of Simplicity by Richard Foster. In it, I remember that I am not a slave to goods and services. I am not a slave to fashion. I am not a slave to owning things. I can be content with what I have. I do not need most of what I think I need. I can be content with what I have. I can be content to have a relationship with Christ. I don’t have to be a slave to the good deal, or the marketing schemes the world has devised. Oh boy…… I needed to be reminded of that!
Prayer
Lord, help us to be content in you during this season of giving and receiving. Help us to have a deep-seated contentment in you!
