“Iron sharpens Iron!” So goes the famous Proverb. Indeed, Proverbs 27:17 instructs us in the essential wisdom that we need a community of believers to grow spiritually. This is inescapable. The writer clarifies, “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” We, too often, think that our spiritual growth can happen in isolation. As a dear pastor friend would often tell me, “The Christian life is personal but NEVER private.” We need one another to grow. We need a caring community. We need people to lovingly speak into us so that we might grow together in Christ.
The first week I served on staff at Timberlake, I was immediately impressed by the passion of this church for healthy community and spiritual growth. As I see it, discipleship is simply the process and effort that makes our spiritual lives healthy. Timberlake’s LifeGroups are designed to be an integral part of that process. If you are not in a LifeGroup, I invite you to plug into one. There are so many groups for you to choose from. These groups accommodate different times of the week, interests, and stages of life. But they all have this in common: they are led by people who love the Lord and are committed to making a loving community that encourages spiritual growth. For those still unconvinced… please know that I believe you will not regret signing up. What do you have to lose? This Sunday, you will be able to see all the LifeGroups represented at church. Feel free to meet leaders, ask questions, and sign up.
